LORMAN, Miss. --Prairie View A&M received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Panthers put 11 runs on the board and defeat the Alcorn State Braves 11-4 Sunday.
Sophomore Tyson Carlton (1-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (17-21, 8-7). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on nine hits, allowing four walks and striking out six.
At the plate, the Panthers were led by junior Tyran Norris, who went 2-for-5 on the day with three RBI. Freshman Cameron Franklin put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI. Junior Garrison Weiss also contributed for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding three walks and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Burroughs' run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Prairie View A&M.
The Braves then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 2-1 until the Panthers expanded their advantage in the sixth. Senior Jonas came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M, which brought the Panthers lead to 3-1.
Prairie View A&M kept Alcorn State without a run before expanding their lead to 5-1 the following inning.
The Braves gained ground, closing the gap to 5-2 until Prairie View A&M added some insurance in the eighth. The Panthers scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run single off the bat of Norris, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 10-2.
Alcorn State got within 10-3 until the Panthers scored again in the ninth inning to stretch its lead to 11-3. Prairie View A&M pushed across a run on Franklin's one-out RBI double. Alcorn State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Panthers still coasted to the 11-4 win.
