PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --The Prairie View A&M Panthers rallied to score one in the ninth inning and walked it off on freshman Michael Smith's double to pick up the 6-5 victory over the UAPB Golden Lions Friday.
Junior Preston Allen (3-3) got the win out of the bullpen for Prairie View A&M (18-22, 9-7). The right-hander went two shutout innings, giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out two. Junior Michael Dews started the ballgame and went seven innings, surrendering five runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking three, and striking out eight.
Offensively, the Panthers were paced by Smith, who went 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles and an RBI. Junior Garrison Weiss furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Sophomore Michael Burroughs also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Smith came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board.
The Golden Lions then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Panthers got back on the board in the third. Prairie View A&M plated two runs off of UAPB pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Weiss, which evened the score at 3-3.
UAPB busted up the tie and grabbed a 4-3 lead heading into the fifth when Prairie View A&M grabbed the advantage at 5-4.
UAPB then rallied to tie the ballgame at 5-5 before Prairie View A&M walked it off in the bottom of the ninth on Smith's one-out RBI double.
