PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --The Prairie View A&M Panthers rallied to score one in the ninth inning and walked it off on junior Garrison Weiss' double to pick up the 7-6 victory over the UAPB Golden Lions Sunday.
Senior Victor Mendoza (2-4) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Prairie View A&M (20-22, 11-7). The right-hander went 1.1 shutout innings while giving up two hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Junior Elijah Breeden also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits.
At the plate, the Panthers were led by freshman Michael Smith, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Weiss put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Michael Burroughs also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a triple and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers were trailing 2-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Prairie View A&M put up two runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Burroughs.
The Golden Lions then scored one run to retake their advantage heading into the third inning, when the Panthers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Weiss came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M, which brought the score level at 3-3.
That 3-3 tie turned into a 6-3 Prairie View A&M lead in the fourth. The Panthers scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer from Smith that scored junior Lee Allen and junior Isaac Davila.
UAPB then rallied to tie the ballgame at 6-6 before Prairie View A&M walked it off in the bottom of the ninth on Weiss' one-out RBI double.
