PRAIRIE VIEW, TX - The Prairie View A&M football team wrapped up the final week of prep with a weekend scrimmage on Saturday ahead of the Labor Day Classic.
"I thought they came out working hard during the whole camp and the important part is we stayed healthy, said head football Coach Bubba McDowell. "Today we played the second and third-string players just to see who can step in when we need them to."
The signal-callers impressed as activity wore on, allowing them to find their groove as evidenced by explosive downfield attacks that put defenders on their heels.
However, the battle for QB1 rages on. Regardless of the outcome, McDowell saw enough to where he feels encouraged by whoever ends up taking the mantle.
"We still haven't settled on who our starter will be, but I feel comfortable in saying that whoever gets the call will be able to lead the team and have us in good shape," said McDowell. "I feel good about who we have at the quarterback position. I feel all three are doing some good things, but when we look at the tape to get an even better assessment we will have a better answer. We plan to name someone soon."
Additionally, the defense flashed with resilience in all situations as well as a willingness to fly to the ball, giving the defensive coordinator Alvin Fosselman, III some optimism in what projects as the strength of the Panthers.
"I feel that all camp has been one of the best camps since I've been here," Fossleman said. "We are deep in all areas of the defense and staying healthy through the three-week camp is a plus."
The season-opener versus Texas Southern is just a week away, inside Panther Stadium on August 31. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Tickets are still available.
