Lady Panthers Takes Win Against Memphis; Takes Loss Against Montana State

TEMPE, AZ --The Prairie View A&M volleyball team participated in two matches today at the Arizona State Tourney. In their first game, they took a win against Memphis with a final set score of 3-1, and suffered a lost to the Montana State Bobcats in four sets.

After the tournament, their record is set to 3-11 for the season.

Against Memphis, they were led by double-doubles from both Smalls, who had 14 kills and 11 digs, and Owens, who had 18 kills and 13 digs. Janyah Henderson also added eight kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Jaqueline Nino chipped in for with 11 digs to go with 11 blocks from Henderson.

In their second game, the Lady Panthers were led by a double-double from Kylee Owens, who registered 17 kills and 10 digs on the day. Janyah Henderson also added 10 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Jaqueline Nino chipped in for with 17 digs to go with six blocks from Kiersten Atkinson.

How It Happened v Memphis

SET 1 | The Lady Panthers took control of the set-one lead at 2-1 and never looked back to win 26-24. Prairie View A&M led by five points at 6-1 before closing out the set, collecting 17 kills along the way. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Memphis attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Prairie View A&M then dropped the second set 26-24, tying the match at a set apiece. The Lady Panthers couldn't survive a ferocious Memphis rally in the second set, falling after leading by eight points at 12-4 earlier in the set.

SET 3 | Prairie View A&M fired back after the set-two loss to take set three and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Lady Panthers the set set three 25-21. Prairie View A&M took the lead for good at 11-10 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Lady Panthers took over the lead.

SET 4 | Prairie View A&M kept the momentum going, earning the match win with a 28-26 set-four victory. The Lady Panthers came out on top of a tight battle, winning in a stanza that was tied seven times and had four lead changes. Prairie View A&M got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked seven Memphis attacks in the stanza and capitalized on 11 Memphis attacking errors on the way to victory.

How It Happened v Montana State

SET 1 | The Lady Panthers lost the first set 25-22 in spite of a solid showing on the attacking side. Prairie View A&M registered a .400 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set loss.

SET 2 | Prairie View A&M then lost set two 25-21 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. Montana State grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 in a set that was tied up six times before the Bobcats took over the lead.

SET 3 | Prairie View A&M fought back to pull within two sets to one, winning their first set of the match in the third stanza. The Lady Panthers won the set 25-19 helped by a solid showing on the attacking end. Prairie View A&M put together a .304 attack percentage with 10 kills in the set win. The Lady Panthers ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. Prairie View A&M's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Montana State attacks in the stanza.

SET 4 | Prairie View A&M couldn't keep the momentum and lost in the fourth set 25-22 to drop the match. Montana State grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 and Prairie View A&M was never able to recover in a set that was tied up five times before the Bobcats took over the lead.

The Lady Panthers volleyball team will return home on Wednesday, September 25 for their first SWAC game of the season against Texas Southern. The game time is set 6:30pm.
