NATCHITOCHES, LA - In an exhilarating non-conference showdown on September 7, 2024, Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) outlasted Northwestern St. with a final score of 37-31 at Turpin Stadium. Despite the cloudy weather, the Panthers demonstrated resilience and tactical prowess to improve their season record to 1-1.  This was a historical moment for the Panthers as this was the first time that these two teams would have met on the gridiron.
The game was balanced at halftime, with PVAMU slightly ahead at 20-14. The second half saw several pivotal moments, notably Cameron Peters' critical 4-yard touchdown pass to Shemar Savage in the third quarter. This play was instrumental in cementing the victory for the Panthers.
Offensively, quarterback Peters was a standout, completing 18 out of 33 passes for 280 yards, which included two touchdowns and two interceptions. Peters' agility was also displayed as he carried the ball seven times, accumulating 13 yards. His connection with receivers Albert Thomas IV, Connor Wisham, Shemar Savage, and Lamagea McDowell—who all scored touchdowns—proved decisive.
On defense, Chester Geffrard and Keon Jones made significant contributions. Geffrard secured 2 tackles and broke up a pass, while Jones added a tackle for loss and grabbed a crucial interception. Special teams also played a vital role in Prairie View A&M's victory, with Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez successfully executing three field goals, with the longest being 41 yards, and completing all four PAT kicks.
Peters led Prairie View A&M's passing attack with 280 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Connor Wisham totaled 83 yards to lead the Panthers' ground attack and added one touchdown in the game. McDowell also tacked on 53 yards and one touchdown on the ground, picking up 4.4 yards per carry.
Peters' most prolific target in the ballgame was Shemar Savage, who caught six passes for 133 yards and one score. Trejon Spiller also got in on the action in the passing game, hauling in six balls for 55 yards.
Ayden Jones paced the Prairie View A&M defensive effort, collecting five tackles and one interception. Steven Shaw, Jr. added 1.0 TFL, one sack, and one forced fumble and Jaylen Stanford had three tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack in the win.
The Prairie View A&M offense did a good job prolonging drives, converting on 50 percent of third-down attempts and going 10-for-20 on the day. The Panthers also went 1-for-1 on fourth down.
Prairie View A&M's defense held up against Northwestern State's offense, giving up 282 total yards.
Looking ahead, the Panthers are set to face Michigan State on September 14, 2024, in Lansing, Michigan, aiming to build on their latest success and carry forward the momentum.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M responded to a 7-0 lead from Northwestern State with a score to tie it at 7-7 with 9:12 left in the first quarter. Northwestern State then scored to take a 14-7 lead before the Panthers put a field goal on the board to close the gap and make it a 14-10 game.
Prairie View A&M followed with a five-yard touchdown run at the 12:31 mark in the second quarter and grabbed a 17-14 lead in the process. The Panthers kept building their advantage, scoring again to go ahead 20-14.
After Northwestern State grabbed a 21-20 lead, Prairie View A&M responded with to a four-yard touchdown pass from Peters to Savage to jump back ahead 27-21 with 6:05 left in the third quarter. The Panthers kept scoring, tacking on a field goal to increase their advantage to 30-21.
Prairie View A&M held onto their lead despite allowing seven Demons points before scoring for a final time with 12:02 remaining in the fourth quarter, bringing their lead to 37-28. Prairie View A&M didn't score again and Northwestern State tacked on three more points to finish off the game.
