Prairie View A&M shoots 50 percent from deep, but falls to Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In a high-stakes SWAC game on Saturday, January 25, 2025, the Prairie View A&M Panthers faced a tough loss to the Alabama State Lady Hornets with a final score of 62-68 in a matchup held at Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Despite leading at moments and a halftime score of Prairie View A&M 32, Alabama St. 33, the Panthers could not maintain their narrow lead as the game concluded.

The performance by Prairie View A&M was highlighted by significant contributions from key players. Mikayla Hutchinson led the scoring with 14 points, complemented by the duo of Amauri Williams and Asha Thompson, each adding 13 points. It was a challenging night for CJ Wilson and other members who fought tenaciously but struggled to leave a scoring impact, with Wilson only capturing 1 rebound.

Further team efforts saw Nyam Thornton contributing 10 points, Adreanna Waddle securing 6 rebounds, and Thompson also chalking up a steal. The opposing team countered with formidable performance from Cordasia Harris who alone tallied 26 points and 19 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.

Despite the hard-fought game, according to the game records, it was Alabama St. that emerged victorious in the final stretch. Praire View A&M's current standing moved to 5-11 overall, with a 2-5 record in the SWAC. Looking ahead, the Panthers are focusing on their next match scheduled for January 27, 2025, against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs hoping to rebound from the recent defeat. The team remains determined, showcasing strong individual performances which they aim to convert into a collective win in the upcoming encounters.


How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Prairie View A&M then cut the Hornets lead to 28-23 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Hutchinson, to tie the game at 28. Alabama State then took control, putting the Panthers at a 33-32 disadvantage heading into halftime.

Prairie View A&M came out of haltime rallying and had constructed a 36-34 lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Williams, to expand its lead further to 45-34 with 6:40 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hornets had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Panthers still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-47 edge.

Alabama State then erased the Prairie View A&M lead in the game's final quarter for a 68-62 comeback victory. Prairie View A&M fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down one shot to account for three of its five points.
