PRAIRIE VIEW, TX -- In a thrilling display of basketball prowess, the Prairie View A&M Panthers triumphed over the Grambling Tigers with a commanding 73-55 win on January 4, 2025. The game, held at the William J. Nicks Building in Prairie View, TX, marked the first SWAC conference game of the season for the Panthers.
The Prairie View A&M offense made hay from beyond the arc, making 11 threes on 18 attempts. Braelon Bush hit five treys for the Panthers in the contest.
Prairie View A&M did a great job disrupting Grambling shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Marcel Bryant's five rejections led the way individually for the Panthers.
How It Happened
The Panthers, led by standout performances from Tanahj Pettway and Braelon Bush, took control of the game early on. By halftime, Prairie View A&M had already established a 36-29 lead over Grambling. Pettway finished the game with 23 points while Bush contributed 17 points, blending scoring with playmaking to ensure a Panthers' victory. Marcel Bryant chipped in as well with 10 points and five blocks.
Contributions from the bench were significant, with notable performances from Jordan Tillmon and Marcel Bryant, among others. Tillmon's all-around efforts and Bryant's defensive presence, including 5 blocks, were vital in stretching the lead during the second half. The Panthers' bench depth was a key factor, as they continued to apply pressure, culminating in a major scoring spree that definitively shifted the game in their favor.
After falling behind 20-13, Prairie View A&M went on a 12-0 run with 11:26 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Pettway, to take a 25-20 lead. The Panthers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 36-29 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 36 points.
Following intermission, Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 58-49 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Elijah Terry's layup, to grow the lead to 65-49 with 2:16 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 73-55 win. Prairie View A&M shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 37 points.
