Big games from Wells and Joseph not enough in Prairie View A&M's 69-68 loss to UT Martin

PENSACOLA, FL --Cory Wells totaled 22 points and Tai'Reon Joseph added 22, but the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team fell short to the UT Martin Skyhawks 69-68 at Pensacola Bay Center Saturday.

The Panthers (2-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Wells, who had 22 points and eight rebounds. Joseph added 22 points and Dontae Horne chipped in as well with 11 points and three steals.

Wells pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Prairie View A&M offense which grabbed 11 boards and turned them into 10 second chance points.

Prairie View A&M forced 16 UT Martin turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Saturday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Horne's three steals led the way for Prairie View A&M.

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-5, Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run with 14:43 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Horne, to take a 13-10 lead. The Panthers then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 39-28 advantage. Prairie View A&M capitalized on 11 UT Martin turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.

UT Martin proceeded to take a 49-42 lead before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Wells' jumper, to shrink the deficit to 49-48 with 10:45 to go in the contest. The Panthers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 69-68. Prairie View A&M capitalized on five UT Martin turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
