PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team kept to just 18.5 percent from beyond the arc in a 5-for-27 shooting performance on the way to a 95-48 win over the at home Monday.
The Panthers (1-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Tai'Reon Joseph, who had 26 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Marcel Bryant added 17 points and three steals off the bench and Cory Wells helped out with 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Wells pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace the Prairie View A&M offense which grabbed 12 boards and turned them into 14 second chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held to only 18.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 34 percent from the field. The did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with four offensive rebounds and managed five second chance points while Prairie View A&M cleared 30 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 5-2 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 15-0 run with 17:28 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Joseph, to increase its lead to 20-2. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 48-31 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 48 points.
Following intermission, Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 68-40 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 76-40 with 8:49 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 95-48 win. Prairie View A&M capitalized on 11 turnovers in the period, collecting 19 points off those turnovers.
