EL PASO, TX --Crystal Schultz scored 20 points and Cj Wilson had 16 more, but the Panthers fell to the UTEP Miners 84-60 on the road Monday.
Schultz led the Panthers (0-1) with 20 points and two steals. Wilson tacked on 16 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks and Alana Shields chipped in as well with seven points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held UTEP to only 38.8 percent shooting from the field, including 22.2 percent from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-7, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 5:12 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Margan Allen, to take a 12-10 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 20-16.
UTEP kept adding to that lead, building a 38-18 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Marckalia Celestine, to narrow its deficit to 38-29, a score that would hold until halftime.
Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Panthers faced a 59-42 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of four UTEP turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 84-60. Prairie View A&M took advantage of seven UTEP turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
