PRAIRIE VIEW, TX -- Junior Jadin Moreno collected four hits to help power the Prairie View A&M Panthers past the Southern Jaguars 17-13 on Saturday.
Senior Seve Medrano (1-0) got the win for Prairie View A&M (7-15, 4-1). The right-hander went three innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on two hits.
In addition to his four hits, Moreno had a double, a home run and four RBI to lead the Panthers. Sophomore Landon Williams put together a standout performance as well, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Senior Mason Heiskell also contributed for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a triple, two walks and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Prairie View A&M hit three home runs in the inning on the way to scoring nine runs.
The Jaguars then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 9-5 until the Panthers expanded their advantage in the fourth. Prairie View A&M picked up two runs when a single from senior Trenton Bush scored senior Brayden Johnson and Moreno, which brought the Panthers lead to 11-5.
Southern narrowed Prairie View A&M's lead to 11-6 before the Panthers stretched the advantage to 12-6 in the fifth inning. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Moreno.
The Jaguars fought back, closing the gap to 12-7 until Prairie View A&M added some insurance in the sixth. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Sonnier Moses, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 13-7.
Southern got within 13-10 until the Panthers scored again in the eighth inning to stretch its lead to 17-10. The Prairie View A&M offense piled up four runs, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Heiskell. Southern put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Panthers still coasted to the 17-13 win.
