GULPORT, Miss—Prairie View A&M's softball team has once again demonstrated why they are a force to be reckoned with in the SWAC. The team not only earned a SWAC Western Division title, but six Lady Panthers captured honors in the 2025 All-SWAC Softball Team selection. The announcement was made on Monday evening, May 5, 2025, at the Orange Grove Community Center, highlighting the individual brilliance and team spirit driving the Lady Panthers this season.
Leading the pack for Prairie View A&M is Cailin Massey a senior native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, was named Pitcher of the Year for her outstanding performance on the mound, also securing a spot on the first team. Massey anchored the pitching staff with resilience and consistency throughout the season. Appearing in 19 games with 11 starts, she posted an 11–5 record over 73.0 innings pitched. Her efforts were highlighted by five complete games and one shutout, demonstrating both durability and effectiveness under pressure.
Despite a 3.93 ERA, her value to the team went beyond traditional metrics. She limited opposing batters to a .286 average while striking out 28 and walking just 25 batters across 310 batters faced. Her ability to pitch deep into games and generate key outs earned her respect across the conference.
In high-leverage moments, Massey delivered tough innings with poise. She surrendered 79 hits and 40 earned runs while showing toughness on the mound, allowing just six home runs in over 65 innings of work. Her competitive fire and leadership were key reasons her team remained in contention all season long.
With a relentless work ethic and commanding presence in the circle, Massey embodied the spirit of a SWAC champion, earning her the league's highest individual honor for a pitcher in 2025.
Talented teammate Janaiya Thomas (OF) a senior native of Houston, Texas also received first-team honors. After a standout season, the transfer from Houston made an immediate impact in her first year, earning SWAC Newcomer of the Year honors. Over 42 games (38 starts), she posted a .402 batting average with 41 hits in 110 at-bats, including 13 doubles, five triples, and two home runs. She drove in 40 runs and slugged .636. She also chipped in 11 stolen bases and maintained a .408 on-base percentage.
Reagan Green (1B) and Kearstin Tinsley (2B) also received first-team honors.
Green hails from Missouri City, Texas in her sophomore year as a Lady Panther, earned First Team All-SWAC honors after a consistent all-around performance. She hit .341 over 39 games (30 starts), collecting 31 hits and driving in 24 runs. While not a power hitter, she showed solid plate discipline with a .406 on-base percentage and just 10 strikeouts. She also added one stolen base and three sacrifice flies. Defensively, Green was nearly flawless at her position, recording 180 putouts with just one error, finishing the season with a .995 fielding percentage.
Tinsley an Aubrey, Texas native made a strong impression in her freshman season, earning a spot on the All-SWAC First Team. Starting 42 of 44 games, she hit .315 with 35 hits, 31 runs scored, and 10 RBIs. She showcased patience at the plate with 27 walks and posted a .450 on-base percentage—one of the best on the team. Her speed was a major asset, swiping 32 bases on the year. Defensively, Tinsley contributed 80 putouts and 58 assists, finishing with a .945 fielding percentage.
The contributions of players from Prairie View A&M were recognized not only on the first team but also on the second team, where Mia Nunez (OF) and Brielle Moreno (P) were also honored for their excellent play throughout the season.
Nunez a native of Navasota, Texas put together a strong junior campaign, earning Second Team All-SWAC honors for her production at the plate and on the basepaths. Over 46 games (45 starts), she hit .305 with 40 hits, 41 runs, 27 RBIs, and a .481 slugging percentage. She showed excellent plate discipline with 25 walks and 4 hit-by-pitches, boosting her on-base percentage to .418. Her speed was a major weapon, swiping 20 bases and adding 5 sacrifice flies. Defensively, Nunez posted a .947 fielding percentage, continuing her steady improvement in the field year over year.
In her first season as a Lady Panther, Channelview, Texas native Moreno earned Second Team All-Conference honors after establishing herself as a reliable presence in the circle. She made 23 appearances with 17 starts, going 9–5 with a 4.28 ERA over 94.2 innings. Moreno tossed 7 complete games, including 3 shutouts, and held opposing hitters to a .238 average.
She struck out 36 batters while allowing 45 earned runs and walked 54. Despite the walks, Moreno consistently found ways to compete and keep her team in games—delivering one of the strongest freshman pitching campaigns in the conference.
Not only did the players receive accolades, but Head Coach Vernon Bland was recognized as Coach of the Year, underscoring his effective leadership and strategic acumen. With Bland's and his coaching staffs guidance has been instrumental in fostering growth and success within the team, propelling the Lady Panthers to new heights.
This recognition from the SWAC not only celebrates individual successes but also highlights the collective effort and camaraderie that defines Prairie View A&M Softball. As the Lady Panthers continue their campaign, they carry not just the accolades but the spirit of champions.
The team will open the 2025 postseason versus Bethune Cookman on Tuesday, May 6 at the Gulfport Sportsplex in Gulfport, Miss. The first pitch is set for 6:00 pm.
