Prairie View A&M women's track and field turned in a record-setting indoor weekend at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque on Jan. 30-31, closing the two-day meet with a school record, multiple top-10 performances in the program record book and an event win in the unseeded 200 meters.
The Panthers were led on Day 1 by Mikyah McDonald, who won the unseeded 200 meters in 23.99 seconds. Her time stands as the second-fastest indoor 200 in Prairie View A&M history, underscoring a strong opening session for the sprint group. In the long jump, Starrmia Dixon (5.63 meters) and Sanai Kintchen (5.78 meters) provided solid marks in the horizontal jumps to complement the track performances.
Middle-distance and long sprint athletes also produced significant results on the first day. In the 400 meters, Treasure Bethea clocked 57.66, while Nikiyah Williams turned in a 56.33, a performance that moves her to No. 10 on the program's all-time indoor list. The highlight of the middle-distance group came in the 600 meters, where Nina Story ran 1:37.03 to set a new Prairie View A&M indoor school record in the event, continuing the momentum built by the sprints group.
Day 2 saw the Panthers maintain that level across the jumps, hurdles and middle distances. In the triple jump, Jada Stanford reached 11.78 meters to lead Prairie View A&M in the field events. On the track, hurdler Lashavia Barclay delivered one of the meet's top preliminary efforts, running 8.61 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. That time ranks as the fourth-fastest in indoor school history and advanced her to the final, where she posted 8.79.
Day 2 also featured another strong sprint showing from Mikyah McDonald in the 60-meter invitational. McDonald advanced to the finals after running 7.51 in the preliminaries, then placed fourth in the final with a time of 7.47. Her finals mark ties the second-best 60-meter time in Prairie View A&M indoor history.
Bethea added to her weekend with a standout performance in the 800 meters on the second day. She crossed the line in 2:16.37, which now ranks as the third-best indoor 800 time in Prairie View A&M history. The effort capped a productive weekend for Bethea, who contributed impactful results in both the 400 and 800 while also anchoring a key relay.
The meet concluded with a strong showing from the 4x400-meter relay, as the quartet of Bethea, Barclay, Lea Murphy and Williams recorded a 3:29.97 clocking. The performance underscored the group's depth from the 400 through the hurdles and middle distances, with each leg building on the individual marks they posted throughout the meet. The relay result provided a strong finishing statement to a weekend defined by progression in the record book and competitive momentum.
Prairie View A&M will carry its New Mexico success into its next appearance on the indoor schedule, returning to action Feb. 13-14 at the Texas Tech Invite in Lubbock, Texas. With a school record, multiple top-10 historical marks and an event victory already secured this winter, the Panthers enter the next meet with established benchmarks and clear signs of continued development across sprints, hurdles, jumps and middle-distance events.
