Horne scores 30 points in Prairie View A&M's win over Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, MS -- Dontae Horne scored 30 points to help lead the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 72-62 on the road Thursday.

The Panthers (11-16, 6-8) had three players score in double figures, led by Horne, who had 30 points. Lance Williams tacked on 11 points and Joey Madimba chipped in as well with 11 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Prairie View A&M collected 43 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Mississippi Valley State's 28, led by 10 boards from Corey Dunning. The Panthers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 15 rebounds into 21 second chance points.

Prairie View A&M's defense held Mississippi Valley State to only 15.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 36.8 percent from the field. The Panthers also limited Michael James to 1-of-8 shooting from downtown in the game. The Delta Devils did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed 10 second chance points while Prairie View A&M cleared 28 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 14-12 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 13:00 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Hassane Diallo, to increase its lead to 19-12. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 40-34 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 40 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Prairie View A&M kept widening that lead, expanding it to 65-58 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 70-58 with 1:02 to go in the contest. The Delta Devils narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 72-62 win. Prairie View A&M made the most of seven offensive rebounds to tack on nine second chance points out of 32 total in the period.
