PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Dontae Horne scored 26 points and Cory Wells added 23 and the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team took down the Jackson State Tigers 85-76 at home Thursday.
The Panthers (12-17, 7-9) had four players score in double figures, led by Horne, who had a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Wells tacked on 23 points, nine rebounds and two steals and Joey Madimba helped out with 18 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Led by Horne's five offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 20 boards that resulted in 29 second chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Jackson State to only 39.7 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After playing to a 13-13 tie, Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run with 12:34 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Wells, to take an 18-13 lead. The Panthers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 33-31.
Jackson State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 56-52 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run to seize a 60-56 lead with 8:06 to go in the contest. The Tigers then fought back to even things up at 75-75 and send the game to overtime. Prairie View A&M shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting seven shots from deep to score 21 of its 44 points.
Prairie View A&M started overtime with a bang, going on a 10-0 run to seize an 85-75 lead with 12 seconds to go in the period. The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 85-76 win.
