DAYTONA BEACH, FL --Cj Wilson, Crystal Schultz and Alana Shields combined to score 41 of Prairie View A&M's 52 total points, but the Lady Panthers fell to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 62-52 on the road Saturday.
The Lady Panthers (2-20, 0-11) had three players score in double figures, led by Wilson, who had 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Schultz added 14 points and Shields helped out with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Led by Marckalia Celestine's four offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
Prairie View A&M's defense held Bethune-Cookman to only 18.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 6-4 advantage, Prairie View A&M went on an 8-0 run with 5:10 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Schultz, to increase its lead to 14-4. The Lady Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage. Prairie View A&M relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
Bethune-Cookman rallied to take a 23-15 lead before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run starting at the 3:05 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Margan Allen, to narrow its deficit to 23-21. Bethune-Cookman responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Panthers trailing 29-21 heading into halftime.
Bethune-Cookman continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-23 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Celestine, to trim its deficit to 35-28 with 5:22 to go in the third. The Lady Panthers were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to Bethune-Cookman either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 42-35. Prairie View A&M played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
Bethune-Cookman kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 51-40 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Wilson's layup, to shrink the deficit to 51-45 with 2:51 to go in the contest. Bethune-Cookman responded and outscored the Lady Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 62-52. Prairie View A&M took advantage of three Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
