Prairie View A&M loses to Texas Southern despite late lead

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --The Prairie View A&M Panthers brought a 12-10 lead into the ninth inning, but could not hold on and fell 14-12 to the Texas Southern Tigers Saturday.

Alejandro Marquez (0-3) came out of the bullpen for Prairie View A&M (7-33, 3-15) and took the loss. Ty Pankonin was a bright spot for the Panthers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing two shutout innings, allowing one hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Prairie View A&M scored twice in the inning, including one on a solo shot from Ethan Walker.

The Panthers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 3-2. The Prairie View A&M offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of John Lawson and a two-run double from Michael Burroughs, which brought the Panthers lead to 6-3.

Texas Southern fired back to tie the ballgame at six before Prairie View A&M reclaimed a 7-6 advantage in the fourth inning.

Prairie View A&M held the Tigers scoreless before building on their lead in the sixth inning. The three-run frame for the Panthers was punctuated by a two-RBI double from Lawson. bringing the score to 10-6 in favor of Prairie View A&M.

Texas Southern came back to tie the contest at 10 before the Panthers reclaimed an 11-10 advantage in the eighth inning. Lawson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board. The Panthers were unable to hold the lead, as Texas Southern scored four times over the remaining one inning to grab the 14-12 win.
