Former Prairie View A&M University track and field standout Deonca Bookman reached a career milestone by capturing the silver medal in the women's 400-meter hurdles at the 2026 USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Bookman delivered the performance of her career, clocking a personal-best time of 53.95 seconds to finish second behind Olympian Anna Cockrell. The runner-up finish marks Bookman's first medal at a USATF Outdoor Championships after competing at six previous national championships.

Coached by Sammy Dabs, Bookman's breakthrough performance is the latest achievement in a career defined by perseverance and steady progression at the national level. Throughout her post collegiate career, she has represented Team USA at multiple international competitions, continuing to establish herself among the country's elite 400-meter hurdlers.

A standout hurdler during her time at Prairie View A&M, Bookman established herself as one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference's premier athletes. She captured three consecutive SWAC championships in the 400-meter hurdles from 2015-17 and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Round four times during her collegiate career from 2015-18.

In 2017, Bookman advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, further cementing her place among the nation's top collegiate hurdlers.

Since graduating from PVAMU, Bookman has continued to compete among the country's elite, making six previous appearances at the USATF Outdoor Championships before breaking through with her first national medal in 2026.
