Asuega arrives at Prairie View A&M with a reputation as one of the rising defensive coaches in the collegiate ranks, bringing experience in player development, front-seven play, and championship-caliber defensive production across multiple Division I and Division II programs.
In his first season at Prairie View A&M, Asuega helped the Panthers establish themselves as one of the top defensive units in the nation during the program’s 2025 SWAC Championship season. Prairie View finished 10-4 overall and ranked No. 3 nationally in total defense, No. 1 nationally in passing yards allowed, No. 3 nationally in passing efficiency defense, and No. 4 nationally in third-down defense. The Panthers also led the SWAC in scoring defense, allowing just 17.9 points per game, while surrendering only 274.0 total yards per game, 139.4 passing yards per game, and holding opponents to 30.5 percent on third down. Prairie View’s defensive performance helped power the program to its first SWAC Championship since 2009.
Prior to Prairie View A&M, Asuega served as the Defensive Line/Defensive Run Game Coordinator at Texas A&M-Kingsville during the 2024 season. Under his leadership, the Javelinas ranked No. 3 nationally in red zone defense, No. 19 in tackles for loss (84), No. 17 in rushing yards allowed per carry (2.8), and No. 25 in rushing defense (99.6 ypg). His defensive line unit was one of the most productive in the Lone Star Conference, with all four starting defensive linemen earning All-LSC honors. Xavier Henderson and Demarcus Hendricks each earned First Team All-LSC recognition, while Hendricks also received All-Region honors.
Before his time at Texas A&M-Kingsville, Asuega spent two seasons at the University of Idaho as the Outside Linebackers/Edges Assistant Coach, where he helped guide one of the top defensive turnarounds in the FCS. During his tenure, Idaho improved from 31.55 points allowed per game in 2021 to 22.08 in 2023, while the Vandals ranked among the national leaders in scoring defense, passing defense, rushing defense, and total defense.
During his time at the University of Idaho, Idaho made back-to-back FCS Playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023, advancing to the FCS Quarterfinals in 2023. He also coached two All-Big Sky defensive linemen and helped mentor Juliano Falaniko, who later signed professionally with the BC Lions of the CFL.
Prior to Idaho, Asuega served as the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Line Coach at New Mexico Highlands University, where he also held the role of Community Outreach Director. In 2021, he helped guide the Cowboys to a 5-6 record, the program’s highest win total since 2012, while the defense totaled 23 sacks and 71 tackles for loss. His work helped Trejan Lawrence earn All-RMAC First Team honors, while Victor Villareal drew professional interest from the CFL, NFL, and Arena leagues.
Asuega began his collegiate coaching career as a Defensive Line Graduate Assistant at Liberty University from 2018-19. While at Liberty, he worked under Turner Gill and current Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze, while also helping recruit and develop Jessie Lemonier, who became one of the top sack producers in the FBS with 20.5 sacks over two seasons before going on to play professionally with the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions.
A Southern California native with Hawaiian and Samoan heritage, Asuega earned his bachelor’s degree from Gardner-Webb University in 2013.
