Women's Basketball To Play In Great Alaska Shootout

The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team will spend its Thanksgiving Holiday in Anchorage, Alaska as the field for the 2012 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout was announced on Thursday including the Lady Panthers.

The women's bracket will include the back-to-back SWAC Champion Lady Panthers, the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, the Utah State Aggies and another team that has yet to be announced.

Tournament play begins on Nov. 20 at the George M. Sullivan Arena on the Alaska-Anchorage campus and will end with the championship game on Nov. 21. The Lady Panthers look to be the premiere team so far in the women's bracket as they make their first Great Alaska Shootout appearance. At 17-16 the Lady Panthers were the only team to make the NCAA tournament. Utah State finished 21-10 last season and went to the WNIT tournament while Alaska-Anchorage (30-5) went to the Elite Eight of the Div. II NCAA Tournament.

Prairie View A&M returns every player from its NCAA Tournament-qualifying team, including All-SWAC First-Teamer and SWAC Tournament Championship MVP Latia Williams, who averaged  14.2 points, eight rebounds and 2.1 assists as a junior.
