SHREVEPORT, La. - Jackson State's offense was too much for Prairie View A&M as the Tigers claimed the 2011 Shreveport Classic by a margin of 44-14 on Saturday evening at Independence Stadium.
The Panthers opened the contest with a bang as freshman quarter De'Auntre Smiley logged a 48-yard rush on the opening drive to move PV into scoring position. However, the drive stalled and took a bad turn as placekicker Chris Barrick missed a 31-yard field goal. Jackson State took advantage of the miss and marched 80 yards in 13 plays as quarterback Casey Therriault rushed in from 2 yards out. The PAT was good as JSU led 7-0 with 7:55 remaining in the first quarter.
JSU returned to the scoreboard in the second stanza after a 22-yard field goal from Jabril Smith with 10:25 remaining. The Panther offense continued to struggle as they were forced to punt for the fourth time in the contest and JSU took advantage offensively on its next drive after Therriault connected with Rico Richardson for a 41-yard strike en route to a 16-0 margin.
Prairie View A&M turned to senior Jonathan Troast on its next drive and found success quickly as Spencer Nelson caught a short pass and raced 77 yards to the endzone. The PAT was good as PV trailed 16-7 with 7:36 left in the half. However, the momentum was short-lived as JSU answered with a 10-play drive, 82-yard and upped its margin to 22-7 following Therriault's 7-yard pass to Renty Rollins.
Forced to punt for the fifth time in the half, PV received a break on the return as JSU fumbled the punt which led to a Panther recovery at the JSU 24. Unfortunately, the Panthers failed to take advantage as Troast's pass was intercepted in the endzone on the next drive.
The second half began in similar fashion as the end of the first for the Panthers as Troast threw his second interception on PV's first drive. Jackson State made the Panthers pay as they extended its lead to 31-7 on Therriault's second touchdown pass to Richardson with 8:08 left. From that point, it was all JSU as they scored two more times before the Panthers returned to the scoreboard late in the fourth quarter on freshman Courtney Brown's 3-yard run with 5:47 left in the game.
Time of possession was the biggest difference in Saturday's game as JSU dominated the clock with 40 minutes of possession compared to PV's 19 minutes. PV also struggled on third down as they failed to convert one the entire game.
Prairie View A&M tallied 263 total yards to JSU's 722. Troast led PV with 130 yards passing on seven receptions while Smiley rushed for 44 yards. Defensive back Brian Medlock led PV with 16 tackles followed by eight from Jerome Howard.
The Panthers step out of SWAC play next weekend and travel to San Marcos, Texas as they'll face Texas State beginning at 3 p.m.
