QUEENS, N.Y. - It took three overtimes for the consolation match at the St. John's Chartwell's Holiday Classic to be decided as the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers suffered a gut-wrenching 89-83 loss to Louisiana Tech on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Panthers were running on fumes as three of their players fouled out (two starters and a top reserve), cutting their eight-man rotation down to five players in the third overtime session. The Lady Techsters outscored the Lady Panthers 9-3 in the final overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Lady Panthers worked from the inside out, getting eight of their 12 overtime points in the paint. Freshman point guard Jeanette Jackson scored four points in overtime for Prairie View, while Louisiana Tech got six of its overtime points from Kiara Young (21 points). Neither team could create separation, as they forced a second overtime tied at 74.
Jackson fouled out in the second overtime period after scoring 15 points. With 1:15 left in the second overtime, freshman forward Larissa Scott grabbed a defensive rebound and kicked it out to junior forward Kiara Etienne, who made the jumper to tie the game at 80. Scott had a monster game, setting new career highs in rebounds (19) and points (15). Etienne scored over 20 points for the second game in a row, with a 24-point performance. Neither team would score in the remainder of the second overtime as the score was tied at 80-all.
Latia Williams (four points and eight rebounds) was the first starter to foul out.
Prairie View A&M held a 57-46 lead in regulation until Jelena Vucinic hit a jumper for Louisiana Tech with 4:02 left in regulation to spark a run.
The Lady Techsters cut into Prairie View's lead on a furious 16-5 run and tied the game at 62-all on a Jasmine Bendolph three-pointer with 47 seconds left. The Lady Panthers had the final possession and called an isolation play for freshman point guard Jeanette Jackson. However, Jackson missed the final layup which led to overtime.
The Lady Panthers put it together in the opening minutes of the second half, starting off on a 15-4 run to take a 46-35 lead over the Lady Techsters. Etienne's three-point shot with 12 minutes left gave Prairie View an 11-point lead. Then Larissa Scott's layup gave the Lady Panthers a 48-35 lead with 10:40 left.
Prairie View and Louisiana Tech finished the first half tied at 31. Both teams battled back-and-forth, with Prairie View getting a well-rounded scoring output from its team. Etienne continued her star-like performance in the Big Apple, scoring eight points in the first half while shooting 50 percent from the field.
The Lady Panthers (2-8) will rest for the Christmas break before returning to action against Texas Wesleyan in two weeks. The two teams will play each other in Houston at the M.O. Campbell Center on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
