BERKELEY, Calif. - Prairie View A&M suffered a disappointing 73-60 loss to UNLV on Saturday night in a physical game at the Cal Classic.
UNLV managed to pull away in the later minutes of the second half as the Lady Panthers struggled with fouls.
Jeanette Jackson fouled out with 3:42 left in the game and set up UNLV's Kelly Thompson with three shots at the foul line. Thompson hit all three to extend her team's lead to 65-53.
The Lady Runnin' Rebels would win the game at the foul line, hitting 31-of-35 shots from the charity stripe. That 88.6 percent free throw effort proved to be huge in determining the game.
Sophomore guard
LaReahn Washington drained a three-point shot with 10:22 left to cut the Lady Panthers' deficit to six points at 45-39. Then junior guard
Latia Williams followed up with a 10-foot jumper with nine minutes left in the game to cut it to 45-41. That was part of a 7-0 run.
Washington had her most productive game as a Lady Panther, scoring a career-high 10 points. She also added two assists in 19 minutes off of the bench. Williams and fellow guard
Kiara Etienne each scored 16 points to tie for the team-highs in that category.
The Lady Panthers stayed within striking distance of UNLV in the first half. Sophomore guard
Michaela Burton drained a three with 6:50 left in the half to cut Prairie View A&M's deficit to 16-14. Then
Larissa Scott hit a turnaround layup after an offensive rebound with 5:25 left in the half to tie it at 16.
However, the the Runnin' Rebels countered with a two-minute, 7-0 run to jump out to a 23-16 lead with under four minutes left in the half. UNLV held a 24-18 lead at the half.
Larissa Scott proved to be a rebound warrior for the Lady Panthers in the first half. She pulled down 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, and she finished the game by tying her career-high with 11 boards.
Prairie View A&M (1-6) will take on Cal State Bakersfield (2-6) at 2 p.m. CST on Sunday in the Cal Classic finale.
