Prairie View A&M dropped Sunday's rubber match to Texas College by a score of 11-3 at the Panther Baseball Field.
Texas College began the game on fire as they tallied four hits in the opening frame en route to a 3-0 lead. Prairie View cut its deficit to 3-1 in the second on Rafael Perez's RBI single which brought home Kyle Bible. Both teams went scoreless until the fifth as Texas College drove in a pair of runs with two outs to claim a 5-1 margin. The Panthers answered in the bottom frame as Darryl Johnson's sacrifice fly scored Colby Hines which allowed them to remain within striking distance.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hines singled to begin the inning and eventually made his way to third base after Perez's sacrifice. An RBI single to center by Sal Hernandez on the ensuing at-bat drew Prairie View to within 5-3 entering the eighth.
Unfortunately, the floodgates opened in the eighth for Texas College as the Steers broke the game open with a five-run frame for a 10-3 margin. The Steers scored once in the top of the ninth en route to claiming the series over the Panthers.
Hernandez led Prairie View with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate along with an RBI. Derrick Mitchell dropped to 0-1 on the mound despite striking out nine in seven innings of action.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 5 as they travel to Houston for a matchup versus Texas Southern beginning at 1 p.m. All games will take place at MacGregor Park.
