Sam Houston State Hands PV 13-7 Defeat

GAME BOX SCORE

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Prairie View A&M surrendered four first-inning runs and faced an uphill battle from that point as Sam Houston State recorded a 13-7 non-conference victory on Wednesday evening.

SHSU scored four runs in the first followed by two in the third to lead 6-0. PV trimmed its deficit in half during the top of the fourth as Sterling Smith recorded an RBI followed by two RBIs from Evan Richard. The Bearkats answered in the bottom of the fourth with two additional runs to lead 8-3 but PV stayed within striking distance in the fifth after Giovanni Angel's RBI for an 8-4 deficit.

Sam Houston State continued to find an answer for PV's surge as a grand slam in the fifth upped its margin to 12-4. Rafael Perez and Daryl Johnson combined for three RBIs in the eighth to draw within five runs but SHSU answered with a run in the bottom frame followed by a scoreless ninth from the Panthers to seal the win.

Kellen Simmons fell to 0-3 on the season as the senior allowed four runs on three hits in an inning of work. Colby Hines led the way with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate followed by Kyle Bible's 2-for-4 outing. Both Richard and Perez finished with two RBIs.

PV returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Grambling State beginning at noon.
