UAPB Hands Baseball 4-0 Defeat

Senior Giovanni Angel had three of PV’s six hits on the afternoon.

GAME BOX SCORE

The Prairie View A&M baseball team was held scoreless as Arkansas-Pine Bluff won the series finale 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Prairie View.

Starting pitcher Benjamin Blackburn got off to solid start by holding the Golden Lions hitless after two innings of play.  However, Blackburn ran in trouble in the top half of the third as Chaz Montgomery recorded the Golden Lions' first hit of the afternoon on a double to left field. Shortly thereafter, Pine Bluff broke the scoring drought in dramatic fashion by taking advantage of a Prairie View infield mix-up as Montgomery rounded the bases for a 1-0 edge.   PV's deficit grew to two runs in the sixth as Matt Pace doubled home Brad McDonley for a 2-0 advantage.

UAPB broke the game open in the seventh inning behind three hits which led to two runs and a 4-0 lead.  Prairie View nearly came close to bursting the egg shell as they loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame facing two outs.  Redshirt freshman center fielder Colby Hines tailed off a collection of pitches to stay alive at the plate but unfortunately popped up to record the inning's final out.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff starter Michael Newby stymied the Panthers' bats from that point as he closed out the game by holding PV hitless over the final two innings.  With the loss, the Panthers fall to 21-16 on the year with an 11-10 SWAC mark.

Senior Giovanni Angel had three of PV's six hits on the afternoon.  Blackburn fell to 2-5 on the season despite striking out seven in 6.1 innings of action.

The Panthers return to action for a non-conference bout against Texas State on Wednesday, April 27 in San Marcos, Texas. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
