GAME BOX SCORE
SHREVEPORT, La. - Prairie View A&M surrendered four runs in the seventh inning as Jackson State handed them a 6-3 loss in the first round of the 2011 SWAC Baseball Tournament at Fairgrounds Field.
Both teams traded runs in the second as Kyle Bible singled home the game's first run followed by an RBI double in the bottom frame from JSU's Jose Cruz. Jackson State moved on top 2-1 in the third after an RBI single but PV responded in the fifth with a pair of runs as Giovanni Angel and Evan Richard recorded back-to-back RBI singles for a 3-2 advantage.
Ahead by a run in the seventh, Prairie View A&M starter Michael Listi ran into some early trouble after issuing a leadoff walk followed by a single. Reliever Daniel Castillo was inserted into the game from that point and recorded the inning's first out before intentionally walking JSU's Stephen Curtis to set up a force play at any base.
Jackson State moved on top by a run as Desmond Russell drove in two RBIs after recording a bases-loaded single. The Tigers drew another walk and broke the game open with another two-RBI single to left from Malcolm Tate for a 6-3 margin.
The Panthers led the eighth off with a leadoff single from Williams but that would be their final base runner of the contest as JSU starter Quintavious Drains retired the final five batters to seal the win.
Prairie View outhit JSU 9-7 with Angel and Williams accounting for a pair of hits. Listi struck out five and allowed five hits in six innings of action.
Prairie View returns to action on tomorrow afternoon in the double elimination tournament as they'll face the loser of the Southern/Alabama State contest at noon. The contest will be broadcasted live on www.KTORRADIO.com.
