BOX SCORE
The Prairie View A&M baseball team dropped its season opener to Southern by a margin of 6-0 in the MLB Urban Invitational at Minute Maid Park on Friday morning.
A throwing error in the first inning came back to haunt the Panthers as SU claimed an early 1-0 lead. PV had two runners in scoring position in the bottom frame but came up short as Jaguar starter Jesse Holiday logged consecutive strikeouts to end the threat. Southern's Wilmy Marrero stole home in the third for a 2-0 advantage in the third and the score remained the same until the sixth as a wild pitch gave way to a 3-0 SU margin. The Jaguars added two more runs in the eighth and another in the ninth while the Panthers struggled at the plate with only four hits for the entire game.
Stater Michael Listi fell to 0-1 on the season as he allowed three hits with two strikeouts six innings of action. Colby Hines, Evan Richard, Brad Benes and Stef Hernandez each had a hit for the Panthers.
Prairie View A&M returns to the field tomorrow night in a showdown against TSU at 7 p.m. in Minute Maid Park. The contest will be televised live on the MLB Network. Tickets are only $5 at the door on Saturday.
