HOUSTON - The Prairie View A&M baseball team stranded 13 runners as they fell to 0-3 following a 5-3 loss to Grambling State in the finale of the MLB Urban Invitational at Minute Maid Park on Sunday evening.
Grambling State scored a run in the first as Darren Farmer doubled in OJ Simmons. The Tigers added another run in the the third before PV tied it up in the fourth as Brandon Brooks recorded a two-RBI single to left. The tie was brief though as the Tigers crossed home a run in the fifth to lead 3-2. PV had runners on second and third with only one out in the bottom of the fifth but came up short as Grambling logged consecutive strikeouts to get out of the jam.
The Tigers upped their lead to 5-2 after scoring a run in the seventh and eighth frames. In the bottom of the ninth, the Panthers made things interesting as Evan Richard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning followed by a Brad Benes' double. Richard scored on James Rodriguez's RBI for a 5-3 margin but the scoring would cease after that as PV grounded out to short and flew out to right with a runner on base.
Brooks finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Benes added two hits. Sean Hollis fell to 0-1 in his PV debut after striking out four in 4.1 innings of action.
The Panthers travel to Huntsville, Texas this Tuesday as they'll battle Sam Houston State at 4:30 p.m.
