Softball Set For Season Opener, Baseball To Resume Play Tuesday

The Prairie View A&M baseball and softball teams prepare for a round of non-conference affairs this week as the baseball team travels to Sam Houston State on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. while the softball team opens up the season at home versus UH-Victoria at 3 p.m. on Tuesday followed by a road trip to Sam Houston on Wednesday.

The Lady Panthers have yet to play a game this month as both of their weekend contests were canceled due to rain.  Under the guidance of first-year head coach Vernon Bland, the Lady Panthers return three of their top six hitters from last season in sophomore Leanna Flores, junior Brittanie Gardner, sophomore Katelyn Den Beste and sophomore Sarina Rios.  Flores batted a team-high .379 last season with 50 hits while Rios led the team with 17 RBIs and three homers. Gardner batted .301 while Den Beste logged 34 hits.

On the mound, Gardner is the team's top returnee with 51 strikeouts in 2011 while junior Lauren Grun struck out 25 in limited action.

Tuesday's game is a scheduled doubleheader set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.  On Wednesday, the Lady Panthers will travel to Huntsville, Texas to face Sam Houston State at the Bearkat Softball Complex in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.

The Panthers look to bounce back from a disappointing weekend in the MLB Urban Invitational which featured three consecutive losses.  Senior outfielder Brandon Brooks had a solid weekend after batting .500 with three hits, a stolen base and two RBIs while fellow senior outfielder Darryl Johnson finished with five total bases.

Tuesday's game is set for 4:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium in Huntsville, Texas.  Following Tuesday's game, PV hosts Texas College in its home opener at noon in Prairie View.
