Lady Panthers To Test Strength In SWAC Round-Up

The Lady Panthers dropped a 7-0 make-up match at home to Texas State on Tuesday afternoon just a few of days after losing to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 7-0 decision in Corpus Christi on Sunday.

Prairie View A&M dropped to 2-7, but it looks to rebound with some pivotal Southwestern Athletic Conference wins in the SWAC Round-Up in Jackson, Miss. The Lady Panthers will start off with Jackson State at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 and then play Alabama State and Alabama A&M on Feb. 25.

“Going into the SWAC Round-Up in Jackson it's going to be interesting,” Prairie View A&M head coach John Cochran said. “But I think everybody is ready to play, and we're looking forward to see where we end up.”

The Lady Panthers have played a tough non-conference schedule in preparation for the rigors of the SWAC season, including Baylor and Abilene Christian. Now coach John Cochran will get a chance to see where his team stacks up.

The No. 3 doubles team of Alix Thomas and Christine Ngo Gwodog has been a stable combination for the Panthers. Gwodog and Thomas have a 3-3 record this season and will be back on the court for the SWAC Round-Up. At the No. 6 spot in singles Thomas also has a 3-4 record, the most wins on the team. The Panthers will look for production from its top players Brittany Harrell (2-7), Raven Lewis (2-7), and Lerato Ndlovu (1-8) to provide wins in the 1-3 singles slots.

“This is going to let us know exactly where we stand,” Cochran said. “Part of the standings this weekend will let us know if we're going to make the SWAC Championships. The top three teams from both sides of each round up are chosen for the championships.”
