AUSTIN, Texas - It wasn't a walk off blast, but Robert Cossey's solo homer over the left field fence in the top of the ninth had the same effect, sucking the life out of an energized Huston-Tillotson crowd and dugout. That shot was complemented by a game-saving performance by Prairie View A&M reliever DeLeon Boyd in the bottom of the ninth to secure a 7-6 win over the Rams in Game 2 of the double-header.
The Panthers completed the two-game sweep and improved to 4-0 against Huston-Tillotson this season after winning 6-1 in Game 1 thanks to a dominating pitching performance by starter Sean Hollis.
In Game 2 of the double-header the Panthers let things get a little too close for comfort before ending it in grand fashion in the ninth inning. Prairie View A&M held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Huston-Tillotson runners scored twice off of middle reliever
Cody Thompson on a RBI ground out with runners at the corners and then a wild pitch with a runner on third. This cut the Panthers' lead to 6-5.
Prairie View A&M coach
Waskyla Cullivan then went to Boyd in the bottom of the seventh, who gave up a RBI single with a runner on second as the Rams tied the game at 6. Boyd held Huston-Tillotson scoreless for two more innings, waiting for the offense to make a move. Cossey responded the game-winning solo homer in the ninth. Boyd picked up his third win of the season, improving to 3-0.
Game 1 was a different story. Hollis threw four innings of perfect baseball before advancing a runner with a base on ball in the fifth inning. He still had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning, but Huston Tillotson first baseman Scott Lacy led off the inning with a triple and was later scored on a RBI single by Michael Mesa. Hollis pitched six innings of three-hit baseball and tallied five strikeouts en route to his first win of the season, improving to 1-2.
Offensively the Panthers were led by short stop
James Fontenot (1-for-2 with one RBI) and Brad Benes (1-for-3 with one RBI and walk) in Game 1. Prairie View A&M (16-9, 7-1 SWAC) will carry the momentum of a five-game win streak into a pivotal three-game series against Grambling State (13-8, 7-2 SWAC). The winner of the series would hold its own fate heading into the second half of the SWAC season. The first pitch will be thrown at noon on Saturday, March 31 to kick off a double-header. Game 3 will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday April 1 in Grambling, La.
