GAME TWO BOX SCORE
GRAMBLING, La. - The Prairie View A&M Panthers split Saturday's double-header against Grambling State, losing a heart-breaking 1-0 duel in Game 1 and rebounding in Game 2 with a 7-5 win in extra innings.
Prairie View A&M had no problems keeping its bats warm in Game 2, as three players finished with three hits. The Panthers held a 5-2 lead after seven innings; their early offensive showing was highlighted by a two-run fourth inning.
Derrick Mitchell seemed to have set himself up for the win, going 7 1/3 innings. He walked two batters before being pulled for reliever DeLeon Boyd in the top of the eighth. Boyd gave up three hits in that inning. Mitchell was charged with two earned runs and Boyd was tallied with one in an eighth inning the Panthers pitching staff would like to forget.
With the score tied at nine heading into the ninth, Prairie View A&M coach
Waskyla Cullivan went to Stephen Lunsford, who pitched two innings of scoreless baseball. This paved the way for the Panthers' offense to win it in the 10th inning.
James Fontenot came up with a clutch, 2-RBI single in the 10th to win the game for the Panthers, finishing 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored.
Brett Valley and Dominiq Harris also joined the Panthers' 15-hit parade with three hits each. Lunsford was awarded his first win of the season.
Panthers ace
Michael Listi dropped to 2-3 after the Panthers were rendered scoreless in Game 1 of the double-header. Listi, who went seven innings in the 1-0 loss, surrendered his only run in the third inning on a wild pitch with a runner at third. Grambling State went up at that moment, and the Panthers never got on the board.
Prairie View A&M (17-10, 8-2 SWAC) and Grambling State (14-10, 8-2 SWAC) will kick off Game 3 of the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Grambling, La. The winner will hold first place in the SWAC West as both teams wrap up the first half of divisional play.
