GRAMBLING, La. - The Prairie View A&M baseball team tallied 14 or more hits for the second-consecutive game en route to a 10-4 win over Grambling State Sunday afternoon at Wilbert Ellis Field in Grambling, La.
Designated hitter Robert Cossey led the way offensively for the Panthers, going 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs and one run scored. Cossey's two-RBI single in the fifth inning scored Dominiq Harris and
Evan Richard to give the Panthers a 4-1 lead. The Panthers scored two more in the sixth thanks in part to a RBI sac fly by Brad Benes to score
James Fontenot.
Panthers starter Stef Hernandez gave up one of his four earned runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Tigers cut their deficit to 6-2, but Hernandez received plenty of run support in the seventh and the eighth innings on the way to his third win of the season. Prairie View A&M scored a run in the seventh and then piled on three in the eighth as Cossey picked up another two-RBI single.
Prairie View A&M improved to a Southwestern Athletic Conference West-best 17-10 with an 9-2 SWAC record. Grambling State fell to 14-10 (8-4 SWAC) and sits a game behind the Panthers in the West standings.
Prairie View A&M will host Houston Baptist at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 in Prairie View before heading to take on Dallas Baptist in Dallas in a three-game series beginning at 3 p.m. on April 6.
