PV Baseball Drops Series Against Southern

BOX SCORE

The Prairie View A&M baseball team got swept by Southern as the Panthers lost Game 3 of their weekend series 12-2 after seven innings Sunday at home.

The Panthers were tied at 1-1 with Southern heading into the fourth inning, however Prairie View A&M starter Stef Hernandez surrendered a single and a two-run homer to start the fourth off, and things unraveled for the Panthers from there. Prairie View A&M gave up nine runs off of six hits and two errors in that pivotal inning and were not able to compensate for it with their own offense before the game was called in the seventh.

Offensively Andre Oliver and Robert Cossey led the way for the Panthers. Oliver went 2-for-3 and Cossey had one hit in three at bats with a runs scored and one RBI.

“It was just a bad weekend for us,” Prairie View A&M coach Waskyla Cullivan said. “We're were trying to keep the lead in our division and keep building off of that, and nothing went our way. We've got to go back to the drawing board. I told the guys to keep their heads up because we are a great team,  but it's just baseball – the game of failure. It was bound to happen.”

The road to the SWAC West Division Championship still has to go through Prairie View A&M. The Panthers dropped to 20-18 with an 11-6 SWAC record, but at 25-14 (14-7 SWAC) Southern still has more conference losses than the West-leading Panthers, who look to get back on the winning side of things in a Tuesday-night game in Beaumont against Lamar at 6:30 p.m.
