PV Baseball Ready For SWAC Tourney Opener

TOURNAMENT BRACKET

The Prairie View A&M baseball team heads into their SWAC Tournament opener against Alabama State at noon Wednesday full of confidence.

When the Panthers (24-22) take on Alabama State (20-34) at Lee-Hines field on the campus of Southern, they will match up against a squad that they demolished 10-0 in the 2011 SWAC Tournament last season. Prairie View has not faced the Hornets this season, but it returns junior second baseman Andre Oliver, senior outfielder Colby Hines and senior catcher Evan Richard, who all had spots in the lineup last season.  Alabama State, under the guidance of first-year head coach Mervyl Melendez, clinched the No. 3 seed from the SWAC East and last played PV as an opening round SWAC Tourney foe in 2006.

Defensively, starting pitchers Derrick Mitchell and Michael Listi return. The sure-handed closer Daniel Castillo also played on that 2011 squad.

Panthers coach Waskyla Cullivan will turn to Mitchell on Wednesday to try and pick up the Round 1 victory. In his last start Mitchell threw a complete game shutout in a 5-0 win against Grambling State on May 5. Mitchell leads all Prairie View A&M starters with a 3.04 ERA and has compiled a 5-4 record.

Live stats from the Panthers' game will be available on www.SWAC.org or can be accessed through the www.PVPANTHERS.com website.
