PV Knocks Off No. 1 Seed Jackson State In SWAC Tournament

BOX SCORE

BATON ROUGE, La. -  Starter Stef Hernandez was a silent assassin on the mound in Prairie View A&M's 2-0 win over No. 1 seed Jackson State Thursday night in the SWAC Tournament at Lee-Hines Field.

Hernandez threw the first complete game shut-out of his Division I career, surrendering four hits on the night and tallying five strikeouts.

Jackson State starter Quintavious Drains held the Panthers scoreless for three innings  before Prairie View A&M struck. He pitched every inning for his team.

The Panthers finally got a hit on the board with a Dominiq Harris double to the right field gap with one out in the fourth. First-Team All-SWAC catcher Evan Richard immediately came through with a clutch single over the outstretched glove of JSU's second baseman to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Prairie View A&M added to its lead when Harris hit a RBI single to the gap between the first and second basemen to drive in Brett Valley from second base, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the sixth. Harris finished the night 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

Thanks to clutch plays by the defenders behind him, including a 5-4-3 double-play in the top of the eighth to get out of a situation with runners on first and second with one out, Hernandez was able to hold off Jackson State to stay in the winners bracket of the tournament.

Prairie View A&M (26-22) will play the winner of Jackson State and Texas Southern Friday at 6 p.m. at LeeHines Field on the campus of Southern University.
