SHREVEPORT, La. -
In a back-and-forth offensive shootout, Jackson State scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to break away from Prairie View A&M by a margin of 52-38 in the fourth annual Shreveport Classic at Independence Stadium.

The Panthers struck first as quarterback De'Auntre Smiley scored the game's first touchdown on a 12-yard scamper with 4:26 left in the first quarter. The PAT was good as the Panthers led 7-0 early in the first stanza. JSU answered with a 26-yard field goal on the ensuing drive but the Panthers returned the favor with a 26-yarder of its own from Barrick to go up 10-7 as the half came to a close.

PV failed to take advantage of an early interception in the second quarter and JSU responded on the next drive as they converted a 2nd-and-20 into a 3rd-and-5 and tied the game at 10-all following a touchdown pass from Clayton Moore to Zach Pendleton The Panthers were forced to punt once again and JSU jumped ahead 17-10 after Moore's second touchdown pass to Pendleton with 5:23 remaining. However, the Panthers knotted the game at 17-all as Smiley hooked up with Olatunde Idowu for a 38-yard touchdown reception followed by Barrick's PAT for the tie. However, the lead was brief as JSU marched 78 yards in eight plays to jump ahead 24-17 on Pendleton to Moore's third hook-up of the night with 30 seconds left in the half.

JSU was forced to punt on its opening drive of the third quarter and PV responded with a bang as Smiley comnnected with frehsman Nick Pitre for a 29-yard touchdown strike at the 11:06 mark. Once again though, JSU anwered as Moore found Michael Perkins for a 46-yard touchdown on the first play of the ensuing drive to jump on top 31-24 following the PAT. But once again, PV kept throwing punches of its own as Smiley found wideout Deandre Cooper for a 25-yard strike to cap off a seven-play, 75-yard drive with 7:48 remaining in the third stanza.

Moore was a thorn in PV's side on JSU's next drive as he converted two straight third downs with first down runs coupled with a first down pass and a five-yard touchdown run on 3rd-and-4 from the PV 5 with 3:14 left for the 38-31 advantage with 3:14 left in the third quarter. On the Panthers' next drive though, Cooper converted the longest pass play of his career as he caught a pass from Smiley and outran the JSU defense for a 93-yard score en route to a 38-all score following the PAT.

Jackson State opened the fourth quarter with a three-yard touchdown from Tommy Gooden and held the Panthers at bay from that point as they forced them to punt twice in a row followed by a turnover on downs at the JSU 13 late in the game. The Tigers added an insurace touchdown with 2:39 left to seal the win.

The Panthers gained 585 total yards offensively with 408 via the air and 177 on the ground. Smiley passed for 408 yards and four touchdowns on 23-of-40 passing coupled with 59 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Cooper caught five passes for 146 yards with two touchdowns while Kenneth Maxwell II and Jerome Howard finished with 10 and 9 tackles, respectively.
