GREENVILLE, Miss. - The defending SWAC Baseball Champions did not have opening-night jitters, lighting up Mississippi Valley State pitchers in a double-header to start off 2013 on a winning streak thanks to 14-11 and 16-3 victories in Greenville, Miss. Prairie View A&M's hot offense could not be stopped on Saturday.
Junior third baseman Dominiq Harris had a monstrous opening-day, batting a combined 4-for-9 with seven RBIs, and four runs scored. He came through with a three-run homer with in the top of the ninth inning in Game 1 of the double-header to give Prairie View A&M a 14-9 lead and put what had been a close game out of reach. In that same game All-SWAC First-Teamer Brad Benes went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored to help lift the Panthers to victory.
On the mound in Game 1, starter Michael Medina earned the win. He had a rocky start, giving up five earned runs in four innings, but he held his own in his first Division I game as he relied on run support.
In Game 2 Stef Hernandez kept the Delta Devils' offense off-balanced, going six innings and surrendering just four hits and one earned run in the 16-3 win. He was able to work with no pressure thanks to he hot bats of his newcomer teammates in the lineup.
Walter Wells, (1-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Greg Salcido (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBIs) and Jeff Sealy (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) played big for Prairie View A&M coach Waskyla Cullivan in their first official games as Panthers.
The Panthers kick off Day 2 of the series on Sunday with another double-header, starting at noon in Greenville, Miss.
