The women's tennis team dropped to 0-2 on the season after a 7-0 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at the PV Tennis Courts.
Despite the loss, sophomore Christine Ngo Gwodog put up a hard fight in her 6-4, 6-4 loss to Stefania Nicolae of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She was able to put together rallies with her opponent but she admitted a few mental mistakes and a slow start may have cost her the match.
“I started slow the first set,” Gwodog said. “But I still fought to come back. I think the biggest issue that I had was my shot selection. I think I played with a little but of fear, but I tried to overcome it when I needed to.”
Gwodog's tough match on the third court was about as hard-fought as the No. 1 court's featuring the Lady Panthers' Brittany Harrell and Maider Martin of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Harrell was defeated 6-4, 6-2. In a battle of the No. 5 singles players PV's Erika Bond was defeated by the Islanders' Leanne Mascall 6-3, 6-3.
The Lady Panthers were disappointed with the loss, but they have time and the potential to improve.
“We fought hard,” Gwodog said. “I think we have a pretty solid team. We came in thinking we could win and we got pretty close. We're going to fight because we're a good team and get it together.”
