Baseball Hits Four Homers, Has Two Complete Games In Doubleheader Win Over TSU

HOUSTON - Prairie View A&M overcame a pair of deficits on Saturday as they displayed solid hitting and pitching in a doubleheader sweep over Texas Southern at MacGregor Park. The Panthers won the opener 11-2 followed by a 6-2 win in the nightcap to claim the series.

In game one, Dominiq Harris hit two of PV's three home runs while Jonathan Mata struck out eight in a complete game performance in an 11-2 win .

The Panthers struck first as Colby Hines hit a one-out triple down the right field line and was brought in via Greg Salcido's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first for the 1-0 lead. TSU moved ahead 2-1 in the second as Adrian Lopez hit a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle but the Panthers answered in the fourth as Jeff Sealy recorded a two-RBI double to score both Salcido and Hines for the 3-2 advantage.

Prairie View A&M never trailed from that point as Harris hit a two-run homer over the left field wall in the fourth followed by Sealy's sacrifice fly in the seventh as PV led 6-2. The Panthers exploded for five runs in the ninth as Harris hit a leadoff homer followed by Andre Oliver's grand slam.

Mata was dominant on the mound with a complete game performance which featured eight strikeouts on five hits. Hines finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored while Sealy tallied three hits with three RBIs. Oliver also finished with three hits and four RBIs coupled with two hits, two runs and three RBIs from Harris.

A two-run homer by Greg Salcido in the fifth gave Prairie View A&M the lead for good as PV closed out the doubleheader with a 6-2 win.

TSU jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first with a solo homer and RBI single. PV scored for the first time in the fourth as third baseman Brad Benes singled home Harris for the 2-1 deficit. With two outs in the fifth, Salcido hit the fourth homer of the afternoon for the Panthers as he also scored Brett Valley en route to the 3-2 lead.

In the eighth, Hines hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a wild pitch. TSU reliever Denzel Pipkin threw his second wild pitch of the inning and Hines scored once again as the pitch hit home plate and sailed over the backstop for the 4-2 lead. PV added two more runs in the ninth as Valley hit a sacrifice fly followed by Hines' RBI double to drive in Walter Wells.

Stef Hernandez overcame a rough first inning and went the distance with seven strikeouts while allowing five hits. Hines led PV with two hits and an RBI while Salcido finished with two RBIs.

The series concludes on Sunday as both teams return to the diamond for a 1 p.m. match-up.
