Panthers Sweep Texas Southern

The Prairie View A&M baseball team completed a weekend series sweep over rival Texas Southern on Sunday with an 8-6 win in Houston to improve to 10-8 on the season with a 5-1 record in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The Panthers took the game into extra innings tied at six after nine. Prairie View A&M senior right fielder Brett Valley singled to right field with two runners in scoring position in the 10th drive in third baseman Brad Benes and advance catcher Trey Price to third. With runners at the corners Panthers sophomore short stop Walter Wells came through with a sacrifice fly to score price and give Prairie View A&M the 8-6 advantage. 

Stephen Lunsford, who held Texas Southern scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings, picked up the win and improved to 1-1 on the season. The Panthers rallied in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

Texas Southern held a 6-4 lead when Wells came through with a sac fly to drive in Valley and cut Texas Southern's lead to 6-5. Junior designated hitter Greg Salcido then came through with his second RBI of the day with a single to center field to drive in senior center fielder Colby Hines and tie the game.

Salcido had a monster day, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Left fielder Jeff Sealy went 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Valley hit 3-for-5 with one run scored and a RBI.

The Panthers will try to tack on to their three-game win streak on Tuesday as they head to Huston-Tillotson in Austin for a double-header. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
