Panthers, Jaguars Swap Late-Inning Heroics In Doubleheader Baseball Split

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Saturday's SWAC baseball series featuring Prairie View A&M and Southern came down to the wire in both games in a doubleheader split.  The Panthers won the opener 3-2 but dropped a 3-1 extra inning decision to Southern in game two.

Reigning SWAC Player of the Week Greg Salcido was the hero in game one as his RBI single scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 win in the series opener.

Tied at 2-all with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Panther shortstop Walter Wells and center fielder Colby Hines hit back-to-back singles off Southern reliever Santos Saldivar.  Salcido picked the perfect time for his first hit of the afternoon as his single scored Wells for the Panthers' sixth consecutive win.

Southern scored the game's first run in the second as Gavin Webster recorded an RBI single to bring home Derrick Hopkins.  The Panthers answered in the bottom frame as third baseman Brad Benes hit a leadoff double followed by Brett Valley's single and stolen base which moved both runners in scoring position.  Andre Oliver's RBI tied the game at 1-all while catcher Trey Price moved PV on top 2-1 immediately after with his RBI single.

The lead was brief as Southern crossed home a run in the third as a fielding error led to a 2-2 tie.  However, Prairie View A&M starter Jonathan Mata kept the Panthers in the game as he recorded seven strikeouts on the afternoon.  In the top of the eighth with the game still tied, SU's Caleb Hatcher hit a leadoff single which signified the end of Mata's afternoon.  Reliever A.J. Helms entered in place of Mata and forced a huge double play on the next at-bat followed by a inning-ending grounder.  After a scoreless bottom eight, Helms pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning which paved the way for Salcido's heroics in the ninth.

The Panthers belted out 13 hits with Wells and Valley leading the way with three each.  Mata struck out seven on six hits while Helms picked up his first win of the year with two innings of scoreless pitching.

In game two, Southern came up with the late-inning heroics as they plated home two runs in the top of the 10th to break a tie game en route to a 3-1 win.

The contest was a pitching duel between Southern's Jose DeLeon and PV's Stef Hernandez as both allowed only four hits apiece.  The Jaguars led 1-0 in the fourth as Webster hit a two-out single to score Hopkins but PV regrouped and picked Webster off at first to end the inning.

The Panthers were scoreless until the seventh as Jeff Sealy drew a one-out walk followed by Benes' single which moved Sealy to third.  The Jaguars were on the verge of getting out the inning unscathed as Valley appeared to hit into an inning-ending double play.  However, the throw was high at first which allowed Sealy to knot the game at 1-all.

The Panthers had an opportunity to win in the ninth as Salcido's leadoff single forced SU skipper Roger Cador to use his bullpen and insert Josh Powell.  Powell struck out first baseman Dominiq Harris on a full count and forced Sealy to fly out to center.  Benes moved Salcido into scoring position with a single but the scoring threat fell short as Valley lined out to center.
