COLLEGE STATION-After a shaky start the Panthers battled Texas A&M in a 8-2 loss on Tuesday night at Blue Bell Park. After giving up six runs in the first inning, the Panthers pitching staff settled into a groove and the bats got going late in the game.
The Panthers got a run across in the fifth inning. Jeff Sealy reached on a leadoff double to left center. Colby Hines laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Sealy to third base, and Andre Oliver walked to put runners at the corners. With Oliver a threat to steal at first, he took the sign and took off. He was thrown out by the first baseman to the shortstop at second, but in all of the chaos Sealy managed to take home and score. After being thrown out, the Oliver's streak of 23-consecutive stolen bases without a caught stealing ended he stole 18 bases on 18 attempts in 2012 and started this season off 5-for-5. He was one of two players in the nation to be perfect on stolen bases with 18 or more attempts in 2012.
Prairie View A&M got another run across in the sixth inning. Brett Valley walked to take first base. He advanced to second on a groundout to third by Brad Benes. That set the stage for designated hitter Greg Salcido, who hit a RBI single to drive in Valley all the way from second to cut the Panthers' deficit to 7-2. Prairie View A&M had another chance to cut into Texas A&M's lead in the seventh with Oliver and center fielder Colby Hines in scoring position with one out. However, sophomore short stop Walter Wells struck out swinging and Valley grounded out to the pitcher to leave the runner stranded.
Panthers starter Sean Hollis found himself in trouble in the first inning. After starting off the inning with a a walk, he was able to strike out Blake Allemond. But things soon began to unravel for the senior pitcher. He committed an error while fielding a bunt to first base, and followed it up by allowing six runs on four hits by the Aggies in the first. This included a solo home run by Mitchell Nau, who sent a shot over the fence in left center to give his team the 6-0 lead.
Hollis dropped to 1-1 on the year after pitching 3.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) with three strikeouts. Texas A&M starter Grayson Long improved to 4-2 after picking up the win over Prairie View A&M. PV dropped to 0-5 All-Time vs. the Aggies all-time after the loss. Salcido led the Panthers offensively, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Panthers (7-7) have a week off before returning to action on the road against Lamar at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Beaumont.
