Panthers Can't Handle HBU Bats In Prairie View

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M suffered an 14-4 loss on Tuesday at the hands of Houston Baptist on Panther Field. The Panthers could not overcome early offensive production by HBU, and were forced to battle from behind after giving up four runs in the first inning and lost in an eight-inning run rule.

Edward Robledo was given the loss after pitching 1/3 of an inning to start the game off. He surrendered four runs (all earned) off of four hits before relieved by Chadd Flick after one out. Robledo dropped to 3-2 on the season. Curtis Jones improved to 2-0 for HBU.

Trailing by six in the seventh inning with one out and Colby Hines on second base, Greg Salcido sent at shot down the middle towards the center field fence. Salcido was able to leg out a double, while Hines hauled it to home plate as the Panthers cut their deficit to 9-4. That would be as close as Prairie View A&M would get in the final innings. Houston Baptist piled on five runs in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Huskies out-hit Prairie View A&M 16-6, and the Panthers hurt themselves with two errors. Designated hitter Greg Salcido and short stop Walter Wells were the only players to get in a groove offensively with multiple hits. Salcido finished 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Wells batted 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

The Panthers hit the road to take on Southern in what could be a pivotal series to decided seeding in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament. The Panthers are 19-18 (8-7 SWAC), sitting at second in the western division. Southern has a 12-9 SWAC record in first place. Game 1 of the series is set to begin at noon on Saturday in Baton Rouge.
