BATON ROUGE, La. -Prairie View A&M didn't go down without a fight, but the Panthers' late-inning rally's were not enough to overcome 7-5 and 5-3 losses to Southern on Saturday afternoon on the road.
Southern took an early lead in Game 1 and followed it up with a fast start in Game 2 to take control of both games. The Panthers trailed by as much as seven points in in Game 1 as Southern scored each of its runs in the first four innings.
Prairie View A&M scored all of its runs in the eighth and ninth innings, doing its best to extend the game. Right fielder Brett Valley was the catalyst with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in short stop Walter Wells from third to put the Panthers first run on the board. Center fielder Colby Hines followed it up with a RBI double to cut his team's deficit to 7-2.
The Panthers then came through with a three-run ninth inning, which was capped off by an Andre Oliver RBI single cut the Jaguars lead to 7-5.
Oliver was Prairie View A&M's main source of offense in Game 2. He was driven in by a Brett Valley single in the seventh to close in on the Jaguars. He then sent a two-run blast over the fence in left-center in the ninth inning. The Panthers, trailing 5-3 at that point, could not capitalize off of that home run. Oliver finished the game batting 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Oliver had three total stolen bases on Saturday.
Reliever AJ Helms was the highlight of Prairie View A&M's pitching staff in Game 2, he came in for starter Stef Hernandez and pitched 3 1/3 innings of one-hit baseball and compiled four strikeouts with no walks as the Panthers tried to fight back.
After dropping the two Southwestern Athletic Conference games, the Panthers fell to 8-9 in league play. They will try to close the series out with a win in Sunday's game at noon at Lee-Hines Field in Baton Rouge, La. Michael Medina is the projected starter for Prairie View A&M.
