Panthers Bounce Back With Big Win Over Southern

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M did just what it needed to do in order to gain the confidence to make a late run in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Panthers bounced back from consecutive double-header losses on Saturday with a convincing 9-2 win over Southern on Sunday to avoid the sweep and improve to 9-9 in SWAC games.

The Panthers took complete control in the seventh inning, extending what was a 3-2 game into a 9-2 Panthers rout. With the bases loaded and one out for Brad Benes in the seventh, he hit a soft roller to third, and the third baseman lost his handle on it as the Panthers scored another run. Greg Salcido then sent a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Trey Price from third. After another mistake by the Jaguars Walter Wells scored for Prairie View A&M from third on a passed ball.

First baseman Dominique Harris walked to put runners on first and second for right fielder Jeff Sealy, who sent a shot to left field to bring in Benes and give the Panthers a 9-2 lead at that point. Center fielder Colby Hines stepped into the batters box with one runner in scoring position and two outs. Sealy and Harris executed a double-steal put put runners on second and third. However, Hines went down swinging to end the inning and leave them stranded, but not before the Panthers had tallied six runs off of five hits and two errors.

Right fielder Brett Valley and Sealy led the Panthers offensively with multiple hits. Valley batted 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Sealy went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Despite batting 0-for-3, Salcido topped all batters with two RBIs.

Defensively the Panthers bounced back from error-laced baseball by committing no errors in the game, and giving its pitching staff wiggle room. Starter Michael Medina pitched seven innings, surrendering just two runs (all earned) off of eight hits with 4 strikeouts. He improved to 3-4 after the win.

The Panthers will have one day of rest before heading to Austin to face Texas at 6 p.m.
