BOX SCORE 2
The Panthers needed to win one game to clinch the third seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, but they lost two close games on the road to Arkansas-Pine Bluff by scores of 5-4 and 7-4 to end the regular season and will enter the SWAC Tournament as a No. 3 seed.
Prairie View A&M lost its final two games to drop to 12-12 in SWAC play, finishing in a virtual tie with Texas Southern. However, since the Panthers won the head-to-head series with TSU, Prairie View A&M has the tie breaker to take the No. 3 seed in the West. With a 14-10 SWAC record, Southern is the No. 1 seed and Arkansas-Pine Bluff round is the second seed.
After a two-run third inning by the Golden Lions in Game 1, the Panthers trailed until the Prairie View A&M scored in back-to-back innings to tie the game. Dominiq Harris blasted his sixth home run of the season to put the Panthers on the scoreboard in the fourth. In the fifth, Brad Benes hit a RBI single to drive in Andre Oliver to briefly tie the game. UAPB countered with unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to go-ahead by two three runs.
Coach Waskyla Cullivan was tossed in the ninth inning, which sparked a two-run rally that fell short for the Panthers. Needing to bounce back, the Panthers gave up six runs in a matter of four innings in Game 2 and were unable to recover from the deficit.
The Panthers will kick off the SWAC Baseball Tournament with a 9 p.m. game vs. Alabama State (No. 2 seed in the East) at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth.
