FORT WORTH - Prairie View A&M was defeated 16-0 in its opening round game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament by Alabama State on Wednesday afternoon at LaGrange Field in Fort Worth.

The Panthers gave up a combined 10 runs in the second and third innings as Alabama State built a insurmountable lead that eventually led to the game being stopped in the seventh inning due to the run rule. 

SWAC Pitcher Of The Year TJ Renda pitched a four-hit shutout for the win, while Panthers starter Johnathan Mata was charged with the loss. First Team All-SWAC first baseman Dominiq Harris batted 1-for-3 for the Panthers in the loss.

Prairie View A&M will try to bounce back on Thursday in a noon game against the winner of the Southern and Alabama A&M match up in an elimination game.
